Carpet installation in Portland & Clackamas

A practical guide to carpet in Portland & Clackamas homes: styles, fibers and pad, where carpet works, what affects the cost, and what to expect on installation day.

Overview

Carpet is installed over a cushion pad and held tight by tack strip around the edges of the room. It’s the softest, warmest and quietest floor you can choose, which is why it stays popular for bedrooms, family rooms and stairs.

How carpet feels and lasts depends on three things: the fiber, how the pile is constructed, and the pad underneath. A good pad can make a mid-range carpet feel and wear far better.

Low. Spills need blotting quickly; pet accidents can soak into the pad.

Can be refreshed
Professional cleaning revives it; it can’t be refinished.
Install time
Often a single day for several rooms.

Carpet styles, fibers and pad

Cut pile

Plush, saxony and frieze styles. Soft and the most common choice for bedrooms. Frieze’s twisted fibers hide footprints and vacuum marks.

Loop pile (Berber)

Tough and low-profile, good for busy areas and basements. Loops can snag on pet claws.

Fibers

Nylon is resilient and long-wearing. Polyester is soft, stain-resistant and usually less expensive. Wool is natural and premium.

Pad

Density matters more than thickness. A firm, dense pad supports the carpet, slows matting and often affects the carpet warranty.

What affects the cost

Every project is priced after your rooms are reviewed. These are the factors that move the number most.

Room sizes and shapes
Carpet comes in 12- or 15-foot-wide rolls, so odd shapes create waste and extra seams.
Carpet fiber and style
Nylon and wool cost more than polyester; denser carpet costs more than thin.
Pad
Denser, higher-quality pad adds a little cost and a lot of comfort and life.
Stairs
Each step is cut and fitted by hand, especially on open or curved stairs.
Removal and disposal
Pulling up old carpet, pad and staples.
Furniture moving
Whether rooms are cleared before installation day.

Step by step

  1. Measure and plan seams

Rooms are measured and seams are planned for low-traffic spots, away from doorways and light from windows.

  2. Remove the old floor

Old carpet, pad and staples come up, and the subfloor is checked for damage and squeaks.

  3. Install tack strip and pad

Tack strip goes around the edges of the room and new pad is laid and secured.

  4. Lay and seam

Carpet is rolled out, cut to the room, and seams are joined with heat-activated tape.

  5. Stretch and finish

Carpet is power-stretched so it doesn’t ripple, trimmed and tucked at the walls, with transitions where it meets hard floors.

How to prepare

  • Clear the rooms and empty closet floors.
  • Take fragile items off nearby shelves and walls.
  • Doors may need trimming if the new carpet is thicker than the old.
  • Vacuum after installation to pick up loose fibers.
  • Open windows for the first few days to clear any new-carpet smell.

Care and maintenance

  • Vacuum weekly, and more often in traffic lanes.
  • Blot spills right away. Don’t rub.
  • Have it professionally deep-cleaned every 12–18 months; many warranties require it.
  • Use walk-off mats at entries to keep grit out.
  • Rearrange furniture occasionally to even out wear.

Frequently asked questions

Can you carpet my stairs?
Tell us how many stairs you have and whether they’re open on the sides, and they’ll be included in your quote.
How much does the pad matter?
A lot. Pad affects comfort, noise and how long the carpet lasts. The right one depends on your carpet and the room.
How long does carpet installation take?
Several rooms can often be done in a single day. Stairs and furniture moving add time.
Can I mix carpet with hard floors?
Absolutely. Many homes have carpet in bedrooms and hard flooring in living areas. Clean transitions between them keep it looking finished and safe to walk on.
Will new carpet smell?
Some new carpet has a mild odor for a few days. Opening windows and running fans helps it fade quickly.
